Media artists Andy Best and Merja Puustinen were pioneers in developing web and particularly multiuser 3D virtual worlds as critical media artworks. Through those experiences they have been able to observe first hand the development of playfulness and interactivity inside virtual communities on the Internet, as well as the problems involved with trying to present such works within traditional art spaces (museums, galleries) or other real-world spaces. The computer terminal provides an entry into a collective virtual space while the physical experience is often lonely and shallow.
