Leonor Ruiz Dubrovin

May, 2013

Just as human memory is fragmented and decays over time, the complexly layered paintings of Leonor Ruiz Dubrovin speak to the passage of time and the fragility of our existence. Nothing is permanent, and yet everything leaves a mark behind. The layers of her work both reveal and cover, telling – often only partly – their own stories. Ruiz Dubrovin comments:

“My paintings might seem to suggest death or symbolize failure, yet I would challenge these assumptions. Through my work I aim to depict in material form the poetry and beauty of degeneration – to assert the life-affirming essence of change and loss."

Spanish-Finnish artist Leonor Ruiz Dubrovin turns the process of creation upside down; her starting point is decay and dissolution. Yet beneath her evocative surfaces of gorgeous rot – of slow vanishings – there are things always waiting to be born.
