Ilya Orlov

Ilya Orlov (1973) is a conceptual artist and theorist based in Helsinki. Since 2015, he has been a PhD candidate and a doctoral trainee at the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki.

Since 2009, Orlov has exhibited his artwork locally in Russia and Finland. Internationally, Orlov’s works have been shown as part of the main project of Manifesta 10 (2014).

In 2014, Orlov was shortlisted for the Innovation Prize – the state prize for contemporary art in Russia, and in 2018, for the Finnish Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale (in collaboration with Joanna Warsza, Minna Henriksson, Britta Marakatt-Labba, Ahmed Al-Nawas). In 2019, Orlov was granted the Merita Foundation Scholarship, which was publicly awarded on the 9th of May 2019 at the Research Pavilion in Venice. 

Currently, Orlov is working on the doctoral thesis in art theory “Artwork: Its Definition, Concept, and Subject”.
